Should I Take My Baby To The Er?
I took my infant to the emergency room yesterday because she was vomiting, had a high fever (102.3), and lethargic. At the hospital, she also began to have diarrhea. After waiting for 4 hours to see a doctor, we were told that it was just a virus, keep giving her fluids and tylenol/motrin, and she would be fine.
Today, she is still vomiting, refusing liquids and formula, and she has already had 10 watery BM’s. She also wants to sleep a lot more than normal (which I think is normal when someone is sick). She is not taking in as much as she is putting out with the vomiting and diarrhea, and I am worried about dehydration. I did the capillary refill test on her toe, and it took 5 seconds to return to pink (I was told to do it to check for dehydration).
My question is, should I take her back to the ER, with the risk that they will turn us away again, or should I wait until tomorrow to see our pediatrician? I have tried everything I know, but nothing works.
My daughter had the exact same thing…same symptoms, everything. We took her to the ER and they said the same thing…just a virus, make sure she doesn’t get dehydrated, etc. etc. We ended up taking her to a walk-in clinic and they gave us a prescription for some suppositories to help make her stop vomitting. It didn’t really seem like it helped, so in my opinion it’s a waste for that. Honestly, the only thing you can do is wait it out and GIVE HER LOTS OF FLUIDS. Give her Pedialyte, Gatorade, and water. If you breastfeed, keep feeding. If she’s bottlefed, no formula until she hasn’t vomitted for 24 hours. Rotate Tylenol and Motrin every 2 hours. And trust me she will get better soon. Also, the best sign of dehydration in a baby is to check if they’re producing tears. Without seriously hurting her, try to make her cry ie: a little pinch or don’t pick her up when she is wanting you to. If she’s not producing tears after she gets into a full blown fit, then you should take her back to the ER immediately. There is really nothing the doctor can do, unless she becomes dehydrated. Email me if you have any more questions.
go to the doctor it only takes minutes for a baby to dihydrate when they are not taking fluid and have a fever!!!! my little boy had a seizure from a fever go to the e.r. now
You should take her to the ER and have them look at her, just to be on the safe side.
Geesh, if she is still the same or worse, GET HER TO THE ER NOW!
I would go back to the ER and don’t let them turn you away this time.
Do you have an alternative to the same ER? Either another hospital or an urgent care clinic? If not, go back.
When in doubt like this, take her back!! The worst that will happen if you take her back is they’ll check her again and send you away.
The worst that could happen if you ignore it…is too awful to contemplate. Take her back ASAP.
take her to the ER again and stay there until they do something for your baby.
Is there another hospital? Take her there if you are concerned about getting turned away. But for God’s sake don’t be using this site and a long list of responses to decide to do what seems natural in the first place. Deal with your gut instinct. The question isn’t even a question.
I would call my pediatrician and tell them Im on the way. If not at least go to the urgent care. With kids they can not tell you whatz wrong. Its better to be safe than sorry.
Call the doctor and do what he says. I you can’t get him take her to the hospital. Most of the time if you have to ask the answer is yes.
I would (if possible) call your pediatrician first and ask them what they think. If you cannot get a hold of them, go to ER
Better to be safe than sorry later.
You are the best judge on your babys health. Take her to ER the worst they can do is say she’s ok and make you feel a little neurotic, who cares? take her now if you are really concerned, if only to put your mind at rest. hope shes better soon.
GO TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…
TAKE HER TO THE ER NOW!!!! Sever dehydration causes brain damage and organs to shut down in little ones. If you are not happy with the care she is getting demand another doctor and/or demand to stay there until you feel comfortable taking her home… She is your child and you are the only one she has to protect and take care of her and to be her health advocate. Please, please, please take her to the ER now.
if she is still sick yes take her back and make sure you also call your ped and have them see her if the er sends you home again
With the fever, puking, diarreaha and refusing to drink anything all day she probably is already dehydrated and you should seriously consider taking her back to the ER.
I really think that if your baby’s eyes are not sinking into their eye socket, just wait to see your baby’s doctor…. If they are then your baby is over dehydrated….. take your baby to see the E.R. asap… good luck
If you have to ask – yes!
If your worry is that they will turn you away then take her to a different hospital- but yes, get her there immediately.
take her back to the ER and DEMAND a thorough examination. i can bet if it was an adult that could speak for themselves, they would probably admit them to get fluids in them
PLEASE TAKE YOUR BABY BACK, CALL HER DOCTOR AND TELL THEM WHAT IS HAPPENING . YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE A VIRSE BUT SHE ALOT MAY BE GETTING Dehydrated.
GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS
My mother said I had the same problem at her age, it was not a virus, it was Chronic Diahrea. I suggest that you take her there and have her tested spesificly for it.
Take her back to the ER. The worst they can do is turn you away. What you were told in the ER more then likely will be different today as odds are the Dr will be different. If you sit at home w your child and she does get worse and god forbid something should happen you will be questioned as to why you didnt take her in. If you are sent home keep giving her pedialite and take her to see her dr tomorrow but go to the ER now
Doesn’t your doctor have an oncall doctor at the practice??
Call them right away and if they don’t take her back to the ER and demand that they treat her…at the very least they can check her dehydration and give her an IV.
That’s ridiculous…I’d be frantic and I’d be the loudest person in the waiting room until they saw my baby and at least did SOMETHING!.
YOU ARE HER VOICE! SCREAM AND YELL UNTIL THEY TREAT HER…TO HELL ABOUT HOW IT LOOKS!
no, you need to take her to er because she needs fluids.. and they can’t turn you away if you need mecdical help.. you need to get fluids into that baby. An adult can only go 2-3 day without water and babies need more… take her and down and insist.. or better yet.. call an ambulace… becuase if the ambulance brings her in, they have to admit her
If it were my baby I would take it to the ER, not only that, but try a different ER, because every doctor is different and in doing this you could get a second opinion.
Call your pediatrician asap RIGHT NOW, explain the situation and let him decide if he wants to see her right away or if she should go to the er. Never take a chance with a baby. ALL pediatricians have nurses ready to take your call & all offices will let you talk to a dr in an emergency.
Call your pediatrician’s # tonight. There will be an option for “emergencies”. Use that. Tell your pediatrician what is going on. In the meantime, start giving your child pedialyte rather than formula or water or any other liquid. It helps with the dehydration. You pediatrician may be able to perscribe a suppository medicine (he’ll call the pharmacy) to aid with the vomiting. Good luck and call right away.
So many people use the emergency room for sniffles and sneezes that true emergencies don’t get take care of in a timely manner. Call your own physician. Also, FYI, 102 isn’t considered extremely high for an infant although it is for an adult, so take a deep breath and relax. It’s going to be okay. They all go through this.
you need to take her to the er now she could be dehadrated if she hasnt eaten all day you need to take her if they turn you down go to the back they cant turn you down if they do go to another hospital please take her in there is the flu that is going sround and my son had it and you are saying everything that he had they didnt turn him down we went back there and were out two days later please dont be afraid to be turned away your daughter is more important than that go ahead take her in and if anything try pedalite
I would definitely take her into the ER. Have you spoken to your Pediatrician? Perhaps if you call the office and explain that the ER wasn’t helpful and she is now the same they will be willing to see you. If not… take her to the ER again.
