My Son’s Doctor Prescribes Antibiotics For Any Symptoms. I Thought Too Much Antibiotic Is Dangerous In Babies?

2009 September 28

And when the antibiotic she prescribed ends up causing more problems (like diarrhea, rash, etc), she’d simply prescribe another antibiotic, and the baby would end up taking a different one every week all year long.
What is it with doctors and antibiotics?
I know they’re powerful and may end your misery sooner, but I don’t think they’re supposed to be the first answer to every symptom.

Your Dr. knows best. The side effecs from the anitibiotics are less severe then the risks of the infection.

Who’s the one who spent about five years of her life studying medicine – you or the doctor……….! ! !

You’re right. Some doctors do overprescribe antibiotics. Not only can they have side-effects but if they are over prescribed then the child can build up a resistance to them which makes them less effective.
I’d change doctors and tell the new one about your concerns. I wouldn’t presume to tell you whether your child requires antibiotics or not, but most infantile complaints will disappear quickly enough with a lot of TLC and some common sense.

TOO MANY of anything is dangerous…
    TOO MUCH AIR
    TOO MUCH SEX
My kids seldom got antibiotics unless the fever persisted over a few days.
    HOWEVER… I didn’t see your child. I didn’t make the Rx… therefore… I’m not in a position to say.
Could be he tested positive for “fast streptococcus” in which case… it’s completely appropriate.

omg, I would so get a new doctor. Too many doctors are pill happy. that is the reason for outbreaks of MRSA. People are becoming immune to antibodics. Anytime you take antibodies, you should take Aciphidolphos from your health food store or supplement isle in a vitamin store. This will replace the good bacteria that the anitbodies destroy. I don’t think you can give that to a baby though. I would try to get the baby off the medication unless he or she has a virus… even than, I would go to a new doctor. My son is 7 months and has the flu right now. It sucs, but he will get through it. His body is built to fight it and it will make his immune system stronger

You never said what was wrong with him for the doctor to be prescribing antibiotics… but taking too many antibiotics is not a good thing. Over using antibiotics eventually make the body immune to them… so they will no longer work. If your son has a common cold you do not need to give him antibiotics. Not all viruses need drugs.
I don’t know why some doctors are more willing to write a prescription than others. It makes me wonder if they get some kind of a cut of the profits… for every prescription they write.
Maybe you should find another doctor and get a second opinion.

the only real problem with giving an infant antibiotics is once theyre older they wont react as well to them, because over time their body has built up and became immune to them.
almost all antibiotics have side effects of fever, rash, diarrhea, etc..
it sounds like you may need a second opinion maybe even another doctor.
i know personally my sons doctor wont prescribe any antibiotics or anything else for that matter, unless there is no other possible way for my son to get over whatever is wrong.
    good luckkk.

Even for myself, I don’t go to doctors who will prescribe antibiotics every time I go. It’s just not necessary for every illness. It’s not healthy, it will make the person more susceptible to really serious infections. You need to find a doctor who can tell the difference between a virus and bacteria.

Trust your instincts with your own children. I have 3 kids and therefore 10 year of experience with childhood ilnesses. Some parents take they children to the doctors for every sniffle they have which is ridiculous. I know when my children have more than a cold and when they need to see a doctor, and consequently they don’t have many antibiotics.
Parents need to remember that children will get sniffles and colds etc, and as unpleasant as they are, the symptoms can be eased by just paracetamol and a bit of TLC. They recover in no time. A friend of mine gives her son nurofen if he sneezes more than once and then wonders why when he has a cold, the nurofen doesn’t touch his symptoms.

I would make sure its absolutely necessary to have them. I know I had antibiotics when i was a baby and it affected my teeth- to much of anything is never a good thing- and now with all of these “super bugs” getting ammuned to antibiotics it makes you think…when you take so much of anything your body becomes ammuned to it and they work less. They also kill some of your good bacteria off.

    thats right
the microbes become resistent to antibiotics and then a superbug will develop.
THIS IS SEREIOUS> talk to thelocal health service and tell them that they are not using antibioticvs properly.

This is true, doctors are a bit prescription-happy when it comes to anti-biotics, and they don’t do your body any good long term, and they do cause side effects sometimes.
If you think she can go without them, for non serious things like colds etc then keep her off them.
However you should really discuss what you just told us with your doctor.

I do not think that too much antibiotics are dangerous in babies, but antibiotics only work for bacterial infections. If they are not helping you child, it is probably because it is viral. Most doctors that prescribe antibiotics for everything is because they are trying to make you feel better because you think that they are helping make your child get over their illness. But if you feel the doctor is overprescribing, I would question it or get a second opinion.

First of all, I want to say that I think mother’s should follow their intuition and not feel stupid for taking their children to the doctor if they feel like they need to. Second, I do think antibiotics are prescribed way too often and the pp are right, they don’t do anything for viruses just bacterial infections. I have 2 kids that are under 3 and I am now on my 3rd pediatrician because I wasn’t satisfied with the first 2 for either not taking my concerns seriously or using prescriptions as an answer for everything. I would check into finding a new doctor and maybe check with your local pharmacy about giving your son probiotics.

How about you stop taking your kid to the doctor for every tiny ailment? The continued use of antibiotics, or ANY medicine for that matter, will result in a weakened immune system later in life. Babies and small children get sick a lot for a reason. Every time they encounter a new virus or bacteria, their bodies build up antibodies so they can protect themselves next time they encounter that virus/bacteria. If you don’t allow their bodies to do this in childhood, it will affect them for the rest of their lives.

If you are not comfortable with this doctor, switch. Ask this doctor why she prescribes so many antibiotics. Many people don’t ask questions. You have a right to ask as many questions as you want as you are looking out for son’s health.
