My Babies Bottom Is Raw From Diarrhea? How Can I Help?
2009 August 12
My baby has had diarrhea fro three days now. his bottom is so raw he screams every time I change him,he even tries getting away from me.It breaks my heart to know he is in so much pain.I have been using Butt Paste um Boudreaux’s paste but he goes atleast 6 to 7 times a day.this paste does not have the chance to help because I have to change him so much. Any pointers? oh and also he has been teething so I assume that is why he is having diarrhea.

i had the same thing happen to my daughter butt. i found that using wet cotton balls as wipes was a pain but didn’t hurt her sensitive butt. also my ped told me that i should not use a paste on a rash because it traps in moisture and that i should air her out then put medicated baby powder on her rash and in her diaper so that when she does go it absorbs more quickly into the excess powder in the diaper. by doing all this her rash was completely going in a week in a half. hope i helped good luck!!!
The butt paste takes a while to work, although it feels good going on, I never use it for the more serious rashes.
Aquafor works faster and is better at soothing chapped bottoms than any other one I’ve seen.
If you want to be tough, use Desitin. It isn’t as soothing going on, but it has a 24 hour maximum work time – it’s really the ‘miracle cream’ of diaper rash creams.
I like to rotate using aquafor and desitin. Change the diaper a lot. Even better – let the baby run around more without a diaper. We have a large, closed fence backyard and a little outside time with no diaper airs out the rash beautifully.
An extra-long bath with a new ducky will also help a lot. Or (if it’s warm enough) put the baby out in a baby pool for a while without a diaper.
Oh gosh, we went through this many times with my son who was taking repeated antibiotics from constant ear infections. There were horrible raw sores on his bottom. We also tried the diaper cremes and they were ineffective. We used to lay him down for nap on several thick towels so his bottom could air out, this really helps out alot. Also my pediatrician put him on probiotics from your local pharmacy, they help get a handle on the diarrhea. Probiotics are the good bacteria in your digestive tract, very safe. The kind we got was called Jarradophillus, it’s a powder that you add to your babies milk/juice. Also my pediatrician has a special creme just for this issue called Magic Butt Paste, call your pediatrician and see if they have anything special like that. It was a life saver!
I would never use butt paste, or any other diaper rash cream on any child. It only makes it worse. I have only used A&D ointment, and it clears it up amazingly fast, is also petroleum based, which protects the little hiney from the new diarrhea. I would only recommend that.
Please take my advice. First get help for the diarrhea, which I can only assume you are or your little one will become dehydrated. Then on your babies bottom, use Crisco shortening. This is a PURE vegetable item and is more natural to the skin. It will form a barrier to bacteria and help to ease the pain of severe diaper rash. I always kept away from anything that was “manufactured.” My son always used to break out in severe blisters from cloth diapers and it wasn’t until I read in a “natural” baby care book about using Crisco that his butt cleared up and we never had any trouble ever again.
No, teething doesn’t cause diarrhoea. He probably has a tummy bug or he is reacting to something you are feeding him. If he is having solids, have you introduced a new food recently? If so stop giving it to him and see if that helps.
My daughters paed cautioned against attributing symptoms to teething. She said that most problems such as fever, diarrhoea, etc are caused by viruses and infections.
After 3 days of diarrhoea, you should take him to the doctor so that anything more serious can be ruled out. You also need to ensure that he isn’t dehydrated. I hope he recovers quickly!
Teething has nothing to do with diarrhea. Call his pediatrician. Sounds like he has gastrointestinal infection. If so, he needs antibiotics. Something is not right. Take him to the doctor. The doctor can also give advice or prescription on the best cream to use on his bottom.
Don’t let this go on. Babies can get dehyrated very easily and quickly. If you let this go on too long he could end up in the hospital.
If he has a lot of diarrhea he’ll be irritable from that too, of course, and it’ll help to give him some pedialyte to keep him hydrated. The butt paste is good I think, but I use desitin, the cream. Its really good at relieving the pain after a few changes, give that a try. Also try just wiping with warm wet paper towels, because my pediatrician told me that the wipes dont help with diaper rash.
I have been through this and I know you will have doubts about what I am going to tell you. Lotromin Athletes foot cream. This was recommended to me by a doctor when my daughter had sever diaper rash and it cleared it up within a few days. get the small tube of cream type and put a thin layer after changes. I also recommend cool oat meal baths to help sooth in the mean time, a few times a day if possible, try getting the softest paper towels and using cool water when wiping instead of baby wipes( no chemicals this way). I’m sure you know to make sure baby is getting PLENTY of clear liquids so he/she doesn’t get dehydrated from the diarrhea. Like I said I know this sounds weird, but I have used it myself so I KNOW it works.
stop using the wipes..they burn..use damp paper towels..let him dry as much as possible ..thin layer of desitin or anything with zinc oxide in it..and then glob on vaseline..it the best barrier.. if the diarrhea doesn’t stop then you may want to switch to soy formula for a week or so..also if your son is on solids ..stop all solids except rice cereal to bind..and make sure he is hydrated..you may want to take him to the doctor for a script for the rash..they won’t do anything for the diarrhea unless he is dehydrated..hang in there mom.
I am in the same boat as you. My son has been havnig bad diarrhea the past couple of days.
Instead of using wipees when changing him, use a soft cloth with warm water instead. Try blotting more then wiping (Wipe where you need to though). Someone told me about using cornstarch instead of diaper cream, I dont know how you’d go about using that though, maybe someone on here knows.
My kids did the same thing often that butt paste really is the best thing to use. It sucks because it seems like it does not have the chance to sit long enough but it will work. Also we used to give our kids oatmeal baths when they had that going on really bad. Aveeno makes some pretty good stuff as far as that is concerned. Hope that helps.
Slather his bottom with diaper rash cream, then put him in some cotton potty training undies so his poor bottom can get some air. and don’t use any baby wipes, only use washcloths and water (the baby wipes will burn the raw areas)
And make sure to keep him well hydrated.
A&D Ointment or baby powder. I’m not sure what’s the difference between the Butt Paste and A&D, but it’s what my family has been using for years, always works great.
Have you tried Sudo Crem for his bum. Its brilliant. However, I’d be more worried about the diarrhoea. After three days you should be bringing him to see the doctor as he may get dehydrated.
DIAPER FREE! Best thing you can do for diaper rash, above all creams and ointments. Make sure you give him pedialite also, so he wont get dehydrated from the diarrhea.
Dont wear him daipers, wear him cotton underwears. Apply little Betenovate ointment. Feed him with your milk only dont give him any outside milk, water or food.
what about putting him on a old blanket and letting him go diaper free for a while. Sounds like his skin needs some air. There are also great over the counter diaper rash ointments. I hope he feels better soon. Good luck!
bring him to the doctors. he might need medicated cream and him having diarrhea isnt good… he should see the dr.
Cornstarch has worked wonders for my baby’s bottom
try giving him a nice milk and oatmeal bath, that can help sooth baby’s bottom.
call your dr. They might suggest something stronger.
consult the baby’s doctor for best answer
use baby powder
you should use it most of the time anyway
Vaseline works great. That what I always used.
