My 12 Month Old Daughter Has Had Diarrhea For 2 Weeks.?
Okay so Monday will be 2 weeks since my daughters 12 month well baby check. At that visit everything was fine, she got immunizations and a 1/2 dose of the flu vaccine. She also started on whole milk that day as my pediatrician told me to do. Since the day after the appointment she has had diarrhea every day about 3 diapers of it a day and has lost 8 ounces. She at first loved the milk but now refuses to drink it and refuses formula and 2% as well. I did take her back to the doctor for this and he said her stomach sounded like a flu bug and give her pedialyte, no milk of any sort then when the stools gets better start back on formula. He said if it was a milk allergy it would cause constipation and vomiting. She has also had a slight cough, nothing major and runny nose. I just realized she is also cutting a tooth. She is usally a little piggy and eats all day and now she really has no appettite. So I am just worried, I mean does a flu bug really cause diarrhea for this long and I mean how long can she really go without her milk. She drinks the pedialyte but I feel horrible. She is not my roly poly anymore she looks so skinny. Do i contribute it to the shots or teething or milk or what and why is she refusing any form of milk? What do I do here?
Poor baby! Poor Mama! Nothing worse than when your babe feels sick.
I would definately take her in for a recheck and insist they do a blood test.
Not wanting to drink the milk could be because she feels so sicky, or an allergy or dislike of it. (maybe later you can add natural cocoa to it for taste)
Bring the doc’s as much information as possible. How much poop? (you can weigh the diaper) how many times a day? Is she pale? Feverish? What temp? Sleeping ? Have them weigh her. Check her ears, eyes, throat.
Ask about immunization shots in full detail and possible side effects/allergic reactions. Ask them to give you literature on it. Or do a google.
They also need to make sure she is not dehydrated.
Don’t leave there without a specific answer as to what’s happening. “A flu bug” doesn’t cut it. Not after 2 weeks and not drinking/eating.
You are her mother, and her advocate it is your job and your right to seek a definate answer and solution to her ailment.
Best wishes to you!
Maybe you should try another doctor young children can dehydrate very easily and that would not be good
I would call the dr again. I don’t think a bug should last that long. I like to err on the side of caution!
Hope your little one gets to feeling better soon.
You should take her to the hospital because a friend of mine’s daughter had diarrhea for 9 days and after that she was fine. You should really get her checked out at a hospital.
It could be any of those things…
My son gets diarrhea when he’s teething (started at 12 months when he started getting his molars). Also, if it’s from a virus, my doctor said it’s normal to last 10 days, but would want us to make an appointment if it persists longer than that. Be grateful she’s taking the Pedialyte! My son hates the stuff. I know it’s so hard to see your child not acting like themselves though.
Big thing… if she’s having diarrhea you should really stay away from fruit or fruit juice of any kind. Our pediatrician advised us to stay clear of any fruit except bananas, and I found it made a difference when our son was having about 10 messy diapers a day. He wouldn’t drink Pedialyte though, and I didn’t want him to get dehydrated, so I just watered down his juice more than usual (7oz water/ 2oz juice) and it seemed to help.
If she’s not getting milk or formula right now, try to make sure she’s still getting calcium through other dairy products like cheese & yogurt. I’d just keep up with your pediatrician and keep him in the know like you have been. Good luck!
