Help! 5.5 Mo Old Has Raw Butt From Bad Case Of Diarrhea – What Works Best To Clear It Up?
2009 December 25
My 5.5 month old has had diarrhea for the past 3 days and has become very raw on his bottom from it. I have been putting aveeno diaper rash and a&d with zinc/aloe and cornstarch and nothing is helping, his butt is so sore he screams and stiffens when I change him and it takes his breath away. I took him to the doctor and she gave me yeast meds, but their not helping either. I don’t know what else to do! I’m not using baby wipes just warm water and cloth. I’m giving him plenty of diaper free time and I also change him as soon as it comes out. Please help, if you know anything that will work.

It seems like you’re doing everything right.
- no wipes, only warm water
- diaper free time
- yeast infection meds
You can try Triple Paste, although that never worked for us. Or Desitin. I got results with the A&D ointment. My sister in law got results with Bordeaux’s Butt Paste. I never tried it, but she also recommended a bath with a little baking soda in it. She said something about it takes the sting out of his butt. I guess it’s worth a shot if you’re desperate.
Unfortunately, sometimes it just takes a few days for his skin to rejuvenate itself and you just have to be patient. And lots of hugs and kisses in the mean time.
seems the doctor should have done something about the diarrhea AND the diaper rash. we always used desitin, but it had the zinc. i hope that one of the things in the rash cream isn’t making the rash worse, which is possible. keep doing what you are doing. should be gone as soon as the diarrhea is gone. lots of fluid with that.poor little fella. i sure feel awful for both of you.
A warm washcloth like you’re using and Vaseline petroleum jelly are best. The jelly coats his skin, keeping any wetness away from his rash. There are many topicals available, but I’ve found the pure petroleum jelly to work best.
Id try the Vaseline.

my son only gets diaper rash from antibiotics if he has an ear infection. If desitin doesn’t work for me I use some cornstarch and it works everytime.
