Baby Can’t Sleep Because She Is Waking Herself Up Rubbing Her Eyes..what Can I Do?

2009 December 21

I tried giving my 7 month old whole milk yogurt yesterday. I gave her two baby spoonfuls to try it (http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/tipYogu… it’s not like milk…it is okay to give before one year).
About 15 minutes after I gave it to her, she started rubbing her face and right eye. Her chin and cheeks got red where the yogurt had touched her face. I put some Aveeno hydrocortisone cream on the red spots and it seemed to help, but I didn’t want to get too close to her eyes so she wouldn’t rub the cream into them.
It went away after an hour. She continued to rub her right eye intermittently throughout the day. She had a terrible night last night. She woke up every hour and I could see she was rubbing her eye when she woke up. There were no other problems. No rashes, no difficulty breathing, no changes in appetite, no vomit or diarrhea.
Today was much better, but I noticed that she was still rubbing her eye, this time both of them. She took pretty short naps today.
Now, it’s 3am and she will not sleep without being on my lap. When I lay her down, she starts rubbing her eyes and it wakes her up. The only thing that calms her down is nursing. If I sleep with her, any movement I make wakes her up enough to make her rub her eyes. So I’m just sitting here, nursing her so she’ll get some sleep.
What can I do? Are there drops I could put into her eyes to cure the itchiness? Do you think the yogurt is the cause of this?

Sounds as though she may have a slight allergy to the yogurt. Even though lactose is broken down in yogurt there are still enzymes and cultures your babby may be allergic to . As long as she is not having any difficulty breathing the eye itchiness will blow over. As one poster stated try again in a couple of months when her digestion has matured a little. As for the itchy eyes there are some Homeopathic eye drops by Hylands you can buy at any drug store they work and they are safe. If she continues with more allergy symptoms make an appt. With her Pediatrician…

it could very well be a food allergy, maybe you should wait a little longer like a couple of months and then give the yogurt to her again and see how she reacts. ask the doctor about the eye drops, her vision is very important of course!

Was the yoghurt flavoured, or have fruit in it? I know the types of babby yoghurt you are talking about, some have fruit in it, others are just plain. I gave yoghurt to my older kids by about 7-8 months, they loved it. You may have to get your child tested for food allergies, swelling and rubbing of the eyes can be caused by an intolerance of a certain food. A babby I know can’t have banana anywhere near her or her eyes get all swollen and she has trouble seeing out of them for a day or so. You can get eye lubrication ointment from the chemist, but you would have to ring them and see what is appropriate for a babby your babby’s age.
Your poor little babby isn’t having much fun lately is she, nor are you my dear.

I think you…should take her to the hospital even though its really late but your NOT gonna get much sleep anyways and you would feel so much better once you know whats wrong and your baby will feel better too. Im sure the doctors will prescribe some eyedrops for her eye and she will be better by tomorrow. Thats what I would do even though all thats wrong with her is her eye but its worth it.
