5 Month Old Has Diarrhea More Than A Week?
2009 August 18
My 5 month old baby has diarrhea more than a week. First he started with a cold then follows with diarrhea in 2 days for 1 week and still has it, at least 5 times per day. Already saw the doctor 3 times and still in contact with doc. The doc said to make sure he is not dehydrated. He is drinking less and on soy formula. Gave him pedialyte but doesn’t drink much. Asked the doc if he is teething, she said no. There is nothing they can do except to let it runs it course. It is easy said then done. I’m so worried because he keeps getting the diarrhea. Did it ever happen to you? If so, please advice

Back in February my then 15 month old had a virus. The main symptom was diarrhea, and it passed in about a week. Has the doctor said what he thinks that cause is? If it doesn’t pass in another couple of days, make another appointment and pin him down on what s/he thinks is causing it. If s/he can’t or won’t, the doc know that you feel like this hasn’t been properly dealt with and you’ll be getting a second opinion (if you feel comfortable doing that).
To give him the pedialite, try getting a clean medicine dropper. Get some of the liquid in the dropper and squeeze it into the inside of the cheek. There are less taste buds on the side of the tongue than the center, and it may make it easier for him to drink. Once he gets more used to the taste, he may get more willing to drink it one his own from the bottle.
My son had this problem too. I think I figured out what caused it…apple juice. for some reason it gave him the runs. try to avoid that and make sure to delute any juice you give him with water.Alot of kids do not like to drink pedialyte but they make popsycles, try to give him a few of those to help keep him hydrated.
Try an infant’s probiotichttp://www.nationalreviewofmedicine.com/…
Yes, my boyfriends sisters little girl had this and it was rotovirus. Very bad for kids to get. She would no sooner take a diaper off and Madelyn was pooping through another diaper. Go to the doctor and suggest this.
Yes I have 5 kids and it has happened to me a many of times !It sounds like a virus ,.Keep giving him lots liqudes and keep in contact with his doctor .Did the doctor give you a sheet on what to look for with dehydration?

If I were you, I would get a 2nd opinion from another doctor. Having diarrea for that long can’t be normal and I would question any doctor telling me to just “let it run it’s course”. Good luck to you!
have your doc check him for rotovirus my daughter had it.
thats a really long time for baby to have diarhea i think you should call doc.
No it has never happened to me personally, but I can tell you this as one mom to another. YOU NEED TO FIND A NEW DOCTOR ASAP. I don’t know what kind of quack you are going to but if your baby is going as often as you say without let up, I think you should take him to the emergency room. Doctors don’t like for there patients to question them but in this case…Run!!!! He could become severely dehydrated and then he will have to be admitted to the hospital and they’ll get in your case, and ask questions like, “How come you didn’t bring him in sooner? and things like that. I hope this is what you were looking for and please keep in touch. Let me know how he is doing. Good luck
