3 Week Old Puppy With Diarrhea. Please Help!?
We have recently bought a 3 week old puppy – a Labrador crossbreed. It was directly separated from litter and has been with us for the past 4 days. The Vet said it was ok to separate the baby from the mother and so we brought it home. It eats well, has good appetite and walks/smells people. We give it Pedigree Puppy weaning food mixed with diluted milk.
Only yesterday we noticed that it shivers at night, especially while sleeping. Though we try to give it as much warmth as possible, the shivering has not stopped. But when it walks, it is ok. Today, we notice that it has a dark brown stool. It has relived 3 times today evening itself. Seems like it has diarrhea. What is wrong with the puppy? Vet said over phone it maybe indigestion and asks us to give it water for rehydration.I’m really worried. Though it has been for a few days, it has grown close to us. I cant take it to the Vet today and tomorrow also. Please tell me any home made remedy which can cure my little pup.
Note: It has not been given any shots so far – in fact we are planning to give one day after tomorrow. Also, it has quite a number of fleas on its skin.
If your vet said it is ok to have a 3 week old puppy then I would suggest you find a new qualified Vet ASAP. 3 weeks old is way to young for a pup to be away from it’s mother and litter mates.
How sickening that this pup is not with it’s momma… it really disgust me that people are willing to buy/sell a pup before 8 weeks at the least.
Get that puppy proper nutrition… Your feeding it crap. No wonder it is sick, not to mention sick from not being with it’s momma.
You need another vet. Bring the puppy back to its mother to be properly cared for and weened. You are asking for more trouble if you keep that puppy and don’t give it the proper time it needs with its litter mates and mother. Also, the breeder that gave you a pup at 3 weeks is a terrible breeder. Pedigree anything is terrible food.
First, get another VET!!! Any vet that told you you could separate a puppy from its mother at 3 weeks is a QUACK!!! And, DO NOT try to remedy this problem yourself. This pup needs to see a vet NOW. And, if you are mixing the “puppy weaning food” (whatever that is) with cow’s milk – STOP. No question, get that puppy to a vet TODAY or you may not have a puppy tomorrow!!!
Take the puppy back to it’s mama and get it when it’s 8 weeks old. Get another vet. Let the mama gradually wean the puppy. And make sure the “breeder” you got it from has mama and puppies seen by a vet. They should have their first set of shots done, have been dewormed, and apparently need flea and tick treatments.
You really seperated the pup from it’s mom and littermates at 3wks? Cow’s milk is not good for puppies. Go get some puppy milk replacer at a good pet store. Get rid of the fleas. Keep him warm–a heating pad covered with a towel and room for him to crawl off if he gets too hot. Poor puppy.
It is toooo young to be away from the litter! whatever vet told you it was fine to take it away from its litter is a CROCK! thats bullcrap and I don’t believe one word of it! you need to take that puppy to the vet, diarrhea at 3 wks could be deadly
Any vet that says it’s okay to bring home a 3 week old puppy is an idiot and should have their license revoked. The same goes for a vet that would vaccinate a 3 week old.
Find another vet and bring your puppy to see them.
i would, if was you to take the puppy to the vet. and get it look at again and to make sare it does not have something bad.
3 weeks is tooo young,, the pup needs mothers milk at this age
COWS MILK is making her sick.
diarrhea will cause dehydration and the fact that she is away from her mom will probably result in death
IDIOTS
it needs its mom
How old is this puppy exactly? 4 days ago you said the puppy (who you keep referring to as “it”–is the pup male or female?)–was 35 days old, then you said 30 days old, and today’s question you say it the pup is only 3 weeks old.
Any of those ages are much, much to young to be away from the mother. The pup’s diarrhea, can easily indicate any number of viruses such as parvo or distemper. There is no home-made remedy for diarrhea & dehydration. In addition, a large number of fleas on a puppy this small, can cause severe anemia due to the large amount of blood loss from the bloodmeals the fleas take in.
I seriously doubt that a veterinarian has recommended this puppy is fine to be away from it’s mother & littermates, or has diagnosed “indigestion” in a 3 week old pup over the phone. It also sounds as though you are planning on vaccinating this puppy yourself. If nothing else, don’t let this pup suffer any longer, actually take this dog to a veterinarian for proper care, before you wake up one morning to a dead puppy.
ok i just got off the phone with my vet it’s not good news, first thing the puppy is to Young and if you don’t get it to the mother dog you need to get it to another vet ASAP they can tell you what kind of milk sup you can use for your puppy shaking and diarrhea can be very fatalel the vet told me you need to get the puppy in as soon as possible and as far as pedigree dog food NO NO NO NO. This is one of the worst foods you could be feeding to your pup. you should google search pet food recalls its not good you will be surprised when you see how many pedigree foods are on the list just take the puppy to the vet some vets do the first exam free check in to it asap than they can tell you what to feed your pup he/she may have parasites as well or possibly even parvo they are both deadly and could kill your puppy if not treated immediately
“Shivering” while sleeping could be cold, but it could also be that the puppy is dreaming. If the pup isn’t actively seeking extra warmth at night (like trying to get under a blanket), then it’s probably just dreams.
However, at 3-weeks it was waaaaay too young to be taken from its mother. It’s digestive tract hadn’t finished developing yet so feeding it solid foods and milk overwhelmed its system. The dark stool is usually an indication of blood in the digestive tract. That could be caused by the solid food being too rough on the bowels, and the lactose in the milk causing too much “acid” in the digestive tract. Never give cow’s milk to dogs; they can’t digest it. Use puppy formula or, if you can’t get that, try some goat’s milk.
When we get abandoned pups at our shelter who are around this age, we usually feed them high-quality, lean raw hamburger for about a week, along with puppy formula (served in a different bowl). The hamburger is soft enough so that its easily digestible but firm enough to help the bowels to get used to more solid food. Then we start adding hard kibble to the mix… and over the next few weeks rotate out the hambuger and rotate in more hard kibble mixed with soft puppy food until what the pup is eating is more “dry” than wet. Make the change in the diet progressive and slow so the pup doesn’t get runny diarrhea.
We suggest you back off on the hard kibble and milk and get the puppy on a less “abrasive” diet… and get a better vet. From what you’ve told us, the one you have sounds like an uncaring idiot.
Boy, we used one of the worst BYB’s in the country, didn’t we?
Because of the bad breeding and bad breeder, it’s pretty likely that the dog is loaded with illnesses.
I wouldn’t trust any vet that told you that this was ok.
And as far as not bringing a 3 week old pup to the vet when it has dark brown diahrrea? Unacceptable.
PS – it’s not a Labrador Crossbreed. It’s a lab mix aka mutt from a puppy mill backyard breeder. I need to leave. I can’t tell you how disgusting this whole situation is.
Added: THERE IS NO AT HOME REMEDY. THE PUP IS AT HIGH RISK FOR DYING! GET YOUR BUTT IN GEAR AND GET IT TO A VET! IF YOU CAN’T DO THIS, FIND SOMEONE RESPONSIBLE WHO CAN CARE FOR THIS POOR CREATURE CORRECTLY!
Did you mean 3 months? Because 3 weeks is waaaaaaaaay too soon to be separated from the mother. 8 weeks is the norm. At 3 weeks, it is barely moving about on it’s own and is still dependent on milk for nourishment. There is no way that it could eat dog food, even the soft stuff.
If the milk you referred to is cow’s milk, then it is giving the poor pup the runs. Cow’s milk has a way different chemical and protein makeup that the pup just cannot digest. If it needs softened food, then soften it with water or a puppy formula. At 3 weeks (unless you meant 3 months), then it would need the formula instead of puppy food.
I’d get a different vet if he/she really told you it was okay to separate a 3 week old puppy from its mother.
RICE & PLAIN YOGURT mixed together! My pup had the same problem and that’s what we had to feed our puppy!
the best thing to do for the fleas is give the puppy a warm bath and bathe it with dish detergent like dawn. the stools if they are not loose and runny are not diarrhea. if they are loose and runny try boiling some hamburger and rice. do not over feed the dog and don’t force it to drink. the shaking and maybe even frequent bowel movements are probaly its nerves. it is only 3 weeks old and pro bally very scared. make sure after the bath that you dry the dog completely and clean its ears, pay special attention around the dogs but because that is a fleas favorite place to be. don’t show the dog you are upset because it will get upset too. pay special attention to the dog and let him know you are glad he is part of your family. Hope he gets better
